Buildings Are Our Story
CHICAGO'S WHITE STAIRCASE

THE WHITE STAIRCASE
The White Staircase in the
original Chicago library is a
fantasy done in all white marble inlaid with
mosaics composed of glass and semiprecious
stones. The panels depict the names of the
world’s great writers and thinkers throughout
history. As the stairs sweep up one end of the building it
goes under bridges and archways before reaching the largest glass dome ever created by Tiffany & Co. at the top. Today building has become the Chicago Cultural Center after the library was moved
to a new home large enough to contain the expanding collection.
